Cloudflare’s Bold AI Shift Slashes Jobs but Boosts Engineers

Cloudflare just shook up the tech world. They cut 1,100 jobs—about 20% of their global team. Yet at the same time, their revenue jumped 34% in just one quarter. How does that add up? The answer: AI is rewriting the rules of work.

AI Reshapes Cloudflare’s Workforce

CEO Matthew Prince made it clear: “Two weeks ago I laid off more than 20% of my workforce. I didn’t do it because Cloudflare is struggling. I did it because business is changing, and to win the future, Cloudflare needs to change with it.”

Prince divides company roles into three groups: builders, sellers, and measurers. Builders create products. Sellers bring in customers. Measurers handle operations, middle management, finance analysis, and marketing coordination.

AI is targeting measurers. Prince said, “AI is eliminating the third group.” He explained that AI systems can now measure organizations with “objective detail and precision” that even the best humans couldn’t match. As a result, roles like middle managers and finance analysts are being cut.

“The vast majority of those we laid off last week were measurers,” Prince said. “With fewer people needed for measuring, we can now invest more in people in the areas that drive growth.”

Engineering Teams Grow Amid Layoffs

Here’s the twist: Cloudflare increased its engineering headcount by 45%. That means engineers rose from 1,308 to 1,894, even after the layoffs. Why? Because builders are thriving in the AI era.

Prince is betting on engineers to multiply the company’s power. “If an engineer on my team can now be 10 times as productive, I’m going to hire as many as I can find,” he said. AI tools surged 600% in usage recently, boosting engineering productivity.

The company also saw a flood of nearly one million internship applications for just 1,111 openings. The demand for tech talent is off the charts. And it’s not just Cloudflare. Across the industry, engineers are the most resilient group.

Research from SignalFire shows engineering roles only fell 11% in hiring since 2019. Meanwhile, engineers made up 55% of new hires in 2025, up from 46% in 2019. AI hasn’t caused unemployment among engineers. Instead, their work has expanded.

Even Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said AI has made engineers “busier than ever.” This matches SignalFire’s view that AI-driven efficiency leads to more engineering work, not less. It’s a real-life example of the Jevons paradox, where better technology increases resource use.

Cloudflare’s Growth and Market Impact

Cloudflare announced layoffs in May 2026, just hours after reporting strong earnings for Q1 2026. Their revenue hit $640 million, a 34% increase year-over-year. The company also saw a 73% jump in deals over $1 million and a 25% rise in large enterprise customers paying over $100,000 annually.

Cloudflare’s stock is up 13% year to date, proving investors are confident in this AI-driven transformation. Prince emphasized the timing of layoffs was about kindness. “I think once we realized it was something we had to do, we made the decision it was the kindest thing that we could do for the team to do as early as possible.”

Prince is clear: AI will not kill all jobs but will change every business. It’s eliminating the measurers but sparing builders and sellers. “AI is not coming for builders or sellers. In fact, I want to hire more builders,” he said. “Humans still control budgets, and they want to buy from people who understand their needs, build trust, and fix whatever goes wrong.”

The Bigger Picture: AI’s Impact on Tech Jobs

Cloudflare’s moves mirror trends across the tech industry. Companies like Amazon, Oracle, Coinbase, Robinhood, Salesforce, Meta, and Microsoft are also cutting jobs due to AI productivity gains. Most cuts fall on roles AI can replicate—operations, finance, middle management.

Meanwhile, engineers remain in high demand. They form the backbone of AI innovation and deployment. The industry’s focus on builders highlights a shift from routine tasks to creative, complex problem solving.

Cloudflare’s story illustrates a bold future. AI shapes who stays and who goes. It slashes some jobs while powering others to new heights. The question is: Are you ready to be a builder in the AI era?
