Fi Ultra Tracker Harnesses Starlink for Nationwide Dog Tracking

Fi just launched a new pet tracker that uses satellite coverage to track dogs anywhere in the US. The Fi Ultra taps into T-Mobile’s T-Satellite network powered by Starlink satellites. That means it tracks your dog even where cellular networks fail—deep in the backcountry or rural areas.

The device switches automatically between LTE and satellite. When LTE is available, it uses that. When out of range, it flips to T-Satellite without any input from the owner. The GPS stays on constantly to provide real-time location updates.

The tradeoff is battery life. Fi Ultra lasts about two days per charge. That’s a steep drop compared to Fi’s Series 3+ devices, which can last from two weeks to three months depending on your dog’s activity. The Ultra costs $199, plus a $20 activation fee and a $189 annual subscription. Existing Fi Series 3+ and Mini owners can buy the Ultra for $299 and add it to their current plan.

Meanwhile, Amazon continues expanding its own satellite broadband network with the Leo constellation. On July 2, 2026, a ULA Atlas V rocket launched 29 more Leo satellites from Cape Canaveral. This launch brings the total Leo satellites in space to over 390, enough for continuous coverage across the initial service area.

Amazon plans to accelerate launches using ULA’s Vulcan rocket, capable of carrying more than 40 satellites per flight. Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket will follow, with a capacity exceeding 48 satellites per launch. Blue Origin’s New Glenn launchpad recently exploded during a test but the company still aims for New Glenn flights by year-end.

For context, Starlink already operates with over 10,000 satellites, dwarfing Amazon’s Leo constellation. Yet, the competition heats up as both race to fill coverage gaps and expand broadband access globally.

Back on the ground, T-Mobile is retiring several of its oldest phone plans dating back nearly 15 years. Customers on these legacy plans will be automatically moved to modern plans with enhanced features and a five-year price guarantee. Some users will see modest price hikes, but affected customers have been notified and can explore options through the T-Life app or customer support.

The pet tracker, satellite launches, and plan shakeups highlight a tech landscape focused on connectivity—whether for your dog’s location, internet in remote areas, or customers’ phone plans. Fi Ultra’s satellite reliance is a bold move to solve a common problem: losing pets where phones don’t reach. The cost and battery life show it’s a tradeoff some owners will accept for peace of mind.
