Google’s Pixel Production Shift Opens a New Manufacturing Chapter

Google is preparing to end Pixel manufacturing in China, setting 2027 as the start of a new production era. The move would cover every Pixel phone, watch and pair of earbuds, with Vietnam and India emerging as the likely destinations.

That is a major change for a product line still made mostly in China today. Google has already expanded production capacity in Vietnam and India, and its next steps could reshape how Pixel devices reach customers around the world.

Every Pixel Device Is Set To Move

Google has told its suppliers that it plans to move production of all Pixel phones, watches and earbuds outside China starting in 2027. The company will no longer manufacture any Pixel device in China beginning next year, making the transition a complete departure from its current setup.

The timing gives Google a clear target for its suppliers and manufacturing operations. Instead of shifting one product at a time, the plan covers the entire Pixel hardware range, from smartphones to wearable devices and earbuds.

Most of Google’s manufacturing still takes place in China, so the change will require a major adjustment across its production network. Vietnam and India are the two countries most likely to receive that work, based on Google’s expanding capacity in both locations.

Google has already developed and manufactured its Pixel 11 devices in Vietnam. Building those phones there required the company to invest in testing equipment and tooling machines from scratch, showing the scale of preparation behind its broader manufacturing plan.

Vietnam Could Become The Key Production Hub

Vietnam offers Google an established technology manufacturing base to build on. The company could tap into the smartphone supply chain ecosystem that Samsung had already established in the country, giving Pixel production access to a network created for large-scale smartphone manufacturing.

That existing ecosystem could help Google expand beyond the Pixel 11 production effort. The company has been increasing its production capacity in Vietnam and India in recent years, and both countries now sit at the center of its plans to move Pixel devices out of China.

The work in Vietnam also shows that Google must build more than assembly lines. Testing equipment and tooling machines are vital to producing the latest Pixel phones, and Google had to create that manufacturing foundation from scratch for Pixel 11 devices.

India is also part of the expected shift, although the verified plans do not specify which Pixel devices will be made there. Together, Vietnam and India provide the destinations Google is likely to use as it moves production of phones, watches and earbuds outside China.

A Smaller Pixel Base May Make The Move Easier

Google believes moving out of China will be easier for it than for Apple because Google does not officially sell Pixel devices in China. That gives the company a different market position as it reorganizes production and supplier operations.

Google’s Pixel phone userbase is still pretty small, another factor in the company’s manufacturing transition. A smaller userbase means the production network serves fewer Pixel customers than the much larger markets supported by major smartphone rivals.

Even with that smaller base, Google is planning to grow Pixel phone shipments. The company has reportedly told suppliers that it wants to raise shipments by 8 to 10 percent this year from the 12 million Pixel phones shipped in 2025.

That shipment target adds pressure to the manufacturing shift. Google is preparing to move production out of China while also planning for more Pixel phones to reach customers, creating a test for its newer operations in Vietnam and India.

What Changes By 2027?

By 2027, Google’s plan is for no Pixel device to be manufactured in China. Pixel phones, watches and earbuds would instead come from production operations outside the country, with Vietnam and India positioned as the likely centers of that new network.

The transition has already begun through Pixel 11 manufacturing in Vietnam, investment in equipment and tooling, and expanded capacity across Vietnam and India. The next phase will determine how smoothly Google can scale those operations for its full Pixel lineup.

Google’s manufacturing footprint is moving toward a wider spread of production, while its Pixel business aims to grow beyond the 12 million phones shipped in 2025. The 2027 deadline now gives the company a clear moment when every Pixel device is expected to come from outside China.
