Joby’s Autonomous Aircraft Crosses America in a 3,199-Mile Mission

Joby Aviation has taken its autonomy technology beyond urban air taxis and across the United States. The company claims its converted aircraft completed the first-ever autonomous flight across the country, covering 3,199 miles from California to North Carolina.

The flight, completed on September 18, 2026, placed autonomy technology inside a converted Cessna Caravan and tested the system across a full cross-country mission. The aircraft handled taxiing, takeoff, cruising and landing without control inputs from an onboard safety pilot.

The journey began at California’s Buchanan Field Airport and ended at Dare County Regional Airport in Outer Banks, NC. Joby described the route as totaling 3,199 miles, a distance that also places the flight beyond 3,100 miles from start to finish.

A human monitor remained on the aircraft, but the safety pilot did not control the plane during the autonomous operations. Joby also supervised the aircraft from its headquarters in California and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, creating a combination of onboard monitoring and ground-based oversight.

That setup gave Joby a chance to demonstrate how its autonomy technology could manage an aircraft through different environments and missions.
