AI in Healthcare

NHS App’s AI Revolution Cuts Waits and Boosts Care

The NHS is unleashing a tech storm. Imagine an app that knows exactly where you need to go for care — a GP, a pharmacy, or even A&E. That’s the power of AI now coming to the NHS App as part of a massive £10 billion technology overhaul. This isn’t just about fancy gadgets. It’s about cutting wait times, freeing up clinicians, and getting patients the right help fast.

AI Triage: Smarter, Faster, and Already Saving Time

The NHS App will soon use AI to triage patients. This tool will ask smart questions that adapt as you respond, zeroing in on your symptoms. It then guides you to the best place for treatment. No more waiting on hold for a GP or guessing if you should head to A&E. In just the next 12 months, over 200,000 patients will try this AI triage before a full rollout to all users by April 2028.

The AI triage isn’t a leap of faith. It’s backed by success. At the Wealden Ridge Medical Partnership in Sussex, a trial cut phone queues for GP appointments by 29%. Dr Ragu Rajan, a GP there, says, “Integrating AI triage directly into the NHS app means our patients can tell us what they need, when they need it, and be directed to the right care first time. It hasn’t replaced our judgement – it’s given us back the time to use it.”

Sir Jim Mackey, Chief Executive of NHS England, adds, “The major overhaul of tech we’re making over the next few years will transform services. The new AI tool in the NHS app will help get patients to the best service for their needs first time – whether that’s a GP appointment, trip to a pharmacy or advice on caring for themselves at home – so that clinicians can make sure those most in need of a GP appointment can get one sooner.”

AI Note-Taking and Microsoft Copilot: More Time for Patients

The NHS isn’t stopping with triage. It’s also rolling out AI tools that record conversations and create real-time transcriptions and summaries. Trials at Great Ormond Street Hospital showed NHS staff spent almost 25% more time with patients when using this AI note-taking technology.

St George’s Hospital found staff saved 47 minutes per shift thanks to AI notetaking. That adds up across hospitals. Over 11,000 A&E clinicians could benefit, opening up more than 9,000 extra A&E consultations daily once the technology scales.

The NHS will equip more than 500,000 staff with Microsoft 365 Copilot, which slashes admin time by an average of two days per month. This frees clinicians from paperwork to focus on patients.

Balancing Innovation with Patient Safety and Privacy

Health leaders urge caution. The evidence for AI productivity gains is still thin. They warn against flawed work and data confidentiality risks. The Royal College of Nursing stresses, “Patient safety and confidentiality must be at the heart of any AI triage system, with a guarantee that a health professional will be the one making decisions at key points in that process,” says Prof Lynn Woolsey.

Government officials echo this view. Stuart Andrew states, “Any innovation that improves patient care and helps the NHS work more effectively should be welcomed. But new technology must be introduced with a fully-funded plan that delivers value for taxpayers.”

Looking Ahead: Smarter Care at Your Fingertips

Beyond AI triage and note-taking, the NHS is introducing a Single Patient Record and new digital tools to improve care management. The NHS App will allow online appointments, follow-up requests, and digital management of conditions. Cybersecurity is also being boosted to protect patient data.

The AI revolution in NHS healthcare is just beginning. Imagine faster access to the right care, fewer phone queues, and clinicians spending more time face-to-face with patients. The NHS is betting £10 billion on tech to transform how health services work. The countdown is on to April 2028, when AI triage will be in every patient’s pocket — guiding care smarter, safer, and faster.
