Pixel Support Dates Stretch Into the 2030s

Pixel support now runs for years. Google Pixel phones receive seven years of software updates, including security patches and major Android OS upgrades, starting with the Pixel 8 in 2023. That policy gives newer devices a support timeline that reaches well into the 2030s.

The change matters because an update promise is more than a marketing number. It determines how long a phone receives security fixes and major software features before its owner must choose between accepting risk, installing another operating system, or replacing the device.

Pixel phones and their final update dates

Google’s older phones have already reached the end of the road. Pixel models from the original device through the Pixel 5a no longer receive updates, while the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro receive five years of updates from their sale date and reach the end of support in October 2026.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro also receive five years of updates from their sale date, with support ending in October 2027. The Pixel 6a loses support after July 2027, and the Pixel 7a continues until May 2028.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro stop receiving updates after October 2030. Their smaller sibling, the Pixel 8a, was released in May 2024 and reaches the end of support after May 2031.

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, released in August-September 2024, receive updates until 2031. The Pixel 9a shipped in April 2025 and receives no further updates after April 2032, while the Pixel 10a receives a final update around March 2033.

The Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, released in 2025, receive support until 2032. Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro, released after August 2033, will support until then. The timeline is long enough to make a phone feel less like a disposable rectangle and more like a product with an actual lifespan.

What happens after support ends

Once updates stop, owners can keep using their phones with the last installed software version. The hardware does not suddenly stop working, but the missing security patches expose users to security risks that grow after support ends.

Custom operating systems do not erase that problem. GrapheneOS and LineageOS can extend the useful life of Pixel phones, but installing either does not fully protect against security threats once official support ends.

LineageOS supports the original Pixel from 2016 and nearly every other Pixel since. It provides security patches for the Linux kernel and framework security, giving older devices another path forward — though not a complete substitute for manufacturer support.

Checking a phone’s update status and support end date remains important, especially for older Pixels approaching their final update. The date separates a device that still receives security protection from one that only appears current because its screen and battery continue working.

Support varies across Android manufacturers. Google offers seven years for Pixel phones, Samsung offers seven years for some models, and OnePlus offers four years of OS updates plus five years of security patches. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 FE, for example, has support until September 2033.

Regulation is also pushing manufacturers toward longer support windows. The European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation began in June 2025 and requires manufacturers to provide at least five years of software updates for new smartphones sold within the region.

That five-year floor does not make every Android phone equal, but it raises the minimum before support disappears. Google’s Pixel policy goes beyond it, at least for devices beginning with the Pixel 8 — a rare case where a promised support period sounds less like fine print and more like a product feature.
