The New Race to Control How Students Reach AI Jobs

The path from education to employment is becoming an AI battleground. OpenAI is moving beyond software tools and positioning itself across the journey students take from learning new skills to earning credentials and reaching economic opportunity.

That shift raises a major question for universities: will they shape the future of AI education, or will companies build the entire pathway around their own platforms?

OpenAI Wants the Whole Pipeline

OpenAI wants to connect learning, certification and real economic opportunity in one clear journey, laying the foundation for its upcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform. The company is offering education, credentials and access to work, creating a pipeline that reaches from the classroom to employment.

Ella Hafermalz described the direction in clear terms: “OpenAI could soon be selling young people a one-stop-shop for learning, credentials and a job, all heavily dependent on its tools.” That is more than a training program. It is a strategy to own the systems students use to learn, prove their skills and find work.

OpenAI is offering certificates in AI tooling and literacy in collaboration with companies including Accenture and John Deere. Those certificates are meant to lead to employment opportunities, giving OpenAI a role in brokering access to jobs as well as teaching the skills connected to them.

The company is also hiring students as campus ambassadors, promising training, funding, swag and access to a community of peers. That program places OpenAI inside student networks before graduation, giving the company another channel into the education-to-work pipeline.

OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company this year with more than $4bn of initial investment. It is sending over 150 “forward deployed engineers” to the “frontlines” of its network of organizations, placing the company close to the workplaces where AI tools, skills and workflows are being built.

OpenAI already owns the tools where learning and work are increasingly happening. Now it is involved in shaping the skills employers want and how students learn those skills, which gives it insight and influence over students’ learning and employers’ workflows and needs.

Universities Are Still Writing the Rules

The need for AI skills is clear. A McKinsey study found that 88% of companies are using AI, while a PWC study published in June 2026 found a 62% average wage premium for workers with AI skills.

Students therefore face a difficult balance. They need to understand AI because employers use it, but they also need to develop judgment, independent thinking and academic integrity without allowing AI tools to replace their own work.

At North Carolina State University, Amanda Cullen expects to graduate in 2030. She said, “Most of my classes have been no AI,” because many professors have explicitly noted on the syllabus that AI is off limits unless properly cited.

Cullen also sees the pressure to learn these tools. “If it’s such a mainstream thing in careers, we should know how to do it in school.” Yet she is taking steps to limit her own AI use even when instructors do not explicitly ask her to do so.

NC State does not have a single AI policy for the entire university. Faculty decide when AI can and cannot be used, and a university spokesperson described the approach this way: “Faculty are provided with resources to establish clear, course-specific expectations that may permit, limit or prohibit AI use; students are responsible for following those expectations and upholding academic integrity.”

That flexibility gives instructors room to match AI rules to each course, but it also creates a patchwork of expectations. One class may prohibit AI, another may allow it with citations, and students must track the difference as they move across their education.

Teaching AI Without Handing Over the Classroom

Lauren Callen, a second-year NC State mechanical engineering student, understands the concern over cheating and prefers guidelines for responsible AI use. Her view points toward a middle path: students need clear boundaries, but banning AI everywhere can leave them unprepared for the workplaces they will enter.

Callen also defended the value of independent thinking: “I feel like people should be able to have their own ideas and not rely on a computer that’s been programmed what to think.” That concern becomes more urgent when the same company may influence the tools students use, the skills they learn and the work opportunities connected to those skills.

Sabrina Habib, an associate professor of visual communications at the University of South Carolina and the inaugural AI coordinator for the College of Information and Communications, said faculty attitudes have shifted toward accepting AI as a skill for the workforce.

Habib allows students to use AI in many cases as long as they disclose how they used it and provide evidence or reflections. “Almost everyone has understood and accepted that it is a skill for the workforce,” she said.

Her approach focuses on teaching students to use AI with judgment rather than treating the technology as either forbidden or automatically trustworthy. “We don’t want to eliminate it because then we’re missing the opportunity of teaching how to use it in a way that’s ethical and critical,” Habib said.

That principle gives universities a powerful role to defend. They can teach AI skills without handing control of learning, credentials and employment to one company. They can also help students question the systems they use, disclose their choices and build ideas that remain their own.

The next stage of AI education will not be measured only by who offers the best tool. It will be shaped by who controls the route from training to opportunity. OpenAI is building that route now, and universities must decide whether to follow its pathway or create a stronger one of their own.
