The PlayStation 5 remains a powerhouse nearly six years after launch. Sony shipped 95.3 million units since June 2020. In the first quarter of FY26 alone, it sold 1.6 million consoles. The hardware’s staying power is no accident.
Sony secured enough memory for the PS5 to meet its sales goals this fiscal year. The company expects hardware profitability for FY26 to match FY25’s level. Sony’s CFO Lin Tao confirmed this, emphasizing stability amid market fluctuations. “We have secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume for FY26,” the company stated.
Support for the PS5 promises to stretch well beyond its current generation. The hardware is expected to last into the PlayStation 6 era and beyond. Sony also announced plans to stop producing physical PS5 discs starting in 2028. This shift reflects the broader trend toward digital content consumption.
Lin Tao addressed gamer concerns around this change: “And so we understand those emotions. We want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore.” Industry icons like Hideo Kojima and Yoko Taro have voiced disappointment over the move away from physical media.
Meanwhile, Sony’s older console, the PS4, remains surprisingly resilient. It still functions well and receives firmware updates, the latest arriving just last month. New games continue to launch for it, including popular titles like Fortnite and Roblox. However, some games like Call of Duty: Warzone will shut down on PS4 and Xbox One later this year. The last notable first-party release on PS4 was God of War: Ragnarok in 2022.
Financially, Sony’s PlayStation division holds strong. Profits rose 37 percent to 54.1 billion yen ($337 million) in the first quarter of FY26. Sales remain flat year-over-year, with third-party game sales growing but first-party shipments down by 900,000 units.
The PS5’s future is digital, durable, and designed for longevity. Physical discs are fading away, but the console itself is built to last well into the next generation. Sony’s focus on memory supply and hardware support suggests the PS5 won’t be obsolete anytime soon.
