Fast Charging Has Three Different Meanings

Fast charging is not one thing. “Fast charging has become a catch-all term that can mean many different things,” Will Shanklin wrote, covering USB Power Delivery, PPS, proprietary systems, wireless standards, and car chargers that treat wattage like a personality trait.

USB Power Delivery, or USB PD, is the broad standard used across phones, tablets, laptops, and some gaming portables. USB PD 3.1 raised the maximum supported power to 240W, while USB PD 3.2 is the latest revision of the standard.

That headline number does not mean every device draws 240W, or even its advertised maximum, from empty to full. Phones marketed with 80W or 100W charging reach their highest speeds when the battery is low, then taper power as the battery fills.

USB PD, PPS, and proprietary charging

Many Android phones support USB-C PD charging, although they may also support proprietary fast-charging systems. Oppo uses SuperVOOC, while Xiaomi uses HyperCharge; the names sound less like electrical standards and more like abilities in a video game.

PPS, or Programmable Power Supply, sits within the USB-C charging landscape and appears in current phone examples. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra uses PPS as part of its 60W “Super Fast Charging 3.0” system.

Google’s Pixel 11 models use USB-C PPS charging to reach their fastest advertised speeds, and the Pixel 11 Pro is designed for a 45W PPS charger. The lesson is simple: a charger can support USB-C and still fail to deliver a phone’s fastest advertised speed if it lacks the required charging system.

Power ratings also describe a peak rather than a promise from start to finish. Fast charging can generate heat, which may speed up battery degradation, but modern phones are designed to manage heat and battery health. Engineering has limits; marketing prefers not to dwell on them.

Wireless charging and the Qi2 split

Wireless charging adds another layer of confusion because Qi2 and Qi2 25W are not equivalent. Qi2 is capped at 15W, while Qi2 25W delivers 25 watts to a compatible device.

That difference changes charging time. Qi2 25W can charge a device to 50% in about 30 minutes, whereas Qi2 takes between 50 and 80 minutes to reach 50%.

The Qi2 25W standard, also called Qi2.2, was announced last summer. It offers a substantial boost over Qi2’s 15W cap and provides improved thermal protection compared with Qi2.

The distinction matters because “Qi2” on its own does not identify the 25W version. A device or charger supporting the older standard remains capped at 15W, while Qi2 25W is built for the higher output and shorter path to half battery.

Car chargers turn wattage into logistics

USB car chargers bring the same standards question into a smaller, less forgiving space. The Anker 167.5W Nano USB car charger has three ports, including a 100W USB-C port and USB-A, plus overheat protection.

That charger can charge a Macbook Air to 50% in about 25 minutes, but its power demand has a catch: it can draw close to the maximum amperage on a 15-amp fuse. A large number on the box is useful only if the vehicle’s electrical limits can support it.

The Anker 75W Fast Charger takes a different approach, with a retractable cable and 45W fast-charging capability. It usually retails closer to $20, making it a lower-cost option for a single fast-charging connection.

The DeWalt 72W Front and Back Seat Charger focuses on passengers rather than peak output. It has five ports overall, including a 30W USB-C port in front and USB-A ports in the back, and it is priced at $45.

Across phones, wireless pads, and vehicles, the meaningful details are the standard, the supported power, the device’s charging requirements, and how that power changes over time. USB PD 3.1 reaches 240W, PPS enables specific phone speeds, Qi2 25W doubles Qi2’s power cap, and car chargers must balance output against port count and fuse limits. The acronym soup is not going away, but the numbers are at least beginning to explain themselves.
