Make Your iPhone Ready for Emergencies and Routine Repairs

Your iPhone can help before trouble starts. Apple added emergency features to iOS in 2014, giving the device a role beyond calls, messages, and the occasional battery panic. Medical ID, emergency contacts, and Emergency SOS can put critical information within reach when the owner cannot provide it.

The useful part is not hidden behind a complicated setup. Open the Health app, select your profile picture, then choose Medical ID. From there, you can create or edit the information stored on the phone.

Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts

Turn on Show When Locked if you want anyone to view Medical ID details from the passcode entry screen. That access matters during an emergency because a person helping you may not know your passcode — and guessing it is not a serious rescue plan.

The Medical ID section also lets you add emergency contacts. Add multiple contacts rather than relying on one person, since the first contact may be unavailable, asleep, or holding a phone that has decided to become furniture.

Enable Share During Emergency Call to let 911 know crucial details without requiring you to share them manually. The feature connects the information in Medical ID with an emergency call, reducing the number of things someone must remember under pressure.

Know how Emergency SOS works

Emergency SOS uses the Side button and either Volume button. Hold the required buttons for several seconds to initiate a call, so learn the motion before an emergency makes practice inconvenient.

You can also enable the Call with 5 Button Presses shortcut for Emergency SOS. If you need the alert sound disabled, turn on Call Quietly, which removes the sound that accompanies Emergency SOS activation.

Emergency SOS can also start from the power-off screen slider. That gives you another route when the usual button combination is not practical. Emergency Bypass is a related tool, but it serves a different purpose: it allows ringtones and notifications to bypass Do Not Disturb settings.

These controls are worth checking before you need them. Since Apple added these features to iOS in 2014, medical professionals know to look for them. A feature that exists but remains disabled is a decorative idea with a battery.

Clear cache when the phone misbehaves

Emergency settings are the priority, but routine maintenance can keep the iPhone from turning small problems into longer chores. “Your iPhone’s cache is a collection of data stored to speed up operations instead of loading information fresh every time.” Clearing that cache can help troubleshoot app issues and free space.

Safari cache can be cleared by choosing Clear History in the browser settings. For Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data. The menu names are not mysterious; they are simply buried where menus enjoy hiding.

The system cache is cleared by restarting the iPhone, and restarting the device is the recommended step when system cache needs attention. Some apps, including Spotify, TikTok, Discord, and Telegram, offer their own cache-clearing options inside the app.

For apps without a built-in option, offloading or reinstalling the app can clear its stored data. Use those steps when problems arise rather than clearing cache on a schedule, because repeated cache clearing can slow the device instead of helping it.

Storage capacity does not replace maintenance. The guidance mentions 256GB as a minimum storage capacity, but free space and app behavior still depend on what the iPhone stores and how its software handles that data.

The iPhone also includes little-known keyboard shortcuts that could maximize your typing. That is a quieter convenience than Emergency SOS, but it belongs to the same principle: configure the tools before you need them, then leave the phone to do its job.
