MacBook Running Slowly? Start With These Built-In Checks

A slow MacBook does not automatically mean it needs a factory reset, a third-party optimizer tool, or a replacement. Before reaching for invasive fixes, use macOS to find out what is actually under strain.

Low storage, heavy memory use, background apps, and incompatible software can all contribute to poor performance. The proper first step is simple: identify the problem, then change what is causing it.

Start With Storage and a Restart

Restarting your MacBook is a sensible first move before trying more involved solutions. A restart can clear the immediate problem without changing settings, removing files, or using a cleanup utility.

Insufficient space on the startup disk can also make a Mac run slowly. To check your storage, open System Settings > General > Storage. This screen shows what is taking up space and includes built-in recommendations for managing it.

Review those recommendations and delete anything you no longer need. If you want to keep files but need more room on the MacBook, consider moving them elsewhere. A portable SSD can provide extra space if you are willing to spend a bit.

The goal is not to delete files at random. It is to find out whether storage is the pressure point, then make enough room for the MacBook to work without the same constraint.

Use Activity Monitor to Find the Strain

Activity Monitor can show whether an app or system process is using more of the MacBook’s resources than expected. Open it through Spotlight search, then start with the CPU tab.

The CPU tab shows how much processor capacity apps and system processes are using. If one app repeatedly jumps to the top while the slowdown is happening, that gives you a useful clue about where to investigate.

Try quitting and reopening that app. You can also reduce its usage by closing tabs or similar items. This approach connects the fix to the problem instead of adding another utility without knowing what needs attention.

Activity Monitor also includes a Memory tab with a Memory Pressure graph. Green means memory is being used efficiently, while yellow or red indicates greater pressure.

If the graph turns yellow or red, check whether one app is consuming a large amount of memory and quit it if you do not need it. Avoid running many memory-hungry apps at the same time, especially when the graph shows that memory pressure is already high.

Check What Runs in the Background

Some apps start automatically every time you sign in. You can manage them under Login Items & Extensions, where you can review which software launches as part of signing in.

Apps can also use App Background Activity to perform tasks while they are not open. Review software you rarely use or no longer need running behind the scenes, and uninstall any Mac apps you do not care about anymore.

These checks matter because an app does not need to be visible on screen to use the MacBook’s resources. Looking at login items and background activity can show what remains active when you are not using it directly.

Review Power Mode and Software Updates

Power mode is another setting to check, although support for Power Modes varies by MacBook model. The default setting is Automatic, while Low Power reduces energy use to extend battery life.

Some MacBook Pro models support High Power mode for demanding workloads. Check which options your MacBook supports, then review whether the current setting fits what you are asking the computer to do.

Software updates deserve attention too. Apple recommends using the latest version of macOS that is compatible with your Mac. If the slowdown began around a software update, built-in checks can still help separate storage, memory, background activity, and incompatible software from other possible causes.

Apple also explains that iPhone updates can make a handset feel sluggish for hours or days afterward. That reminder matters when a phone feels slow after an update: the timing may be connected to the update itself rather than a permanent hardware problem.

Spotlight relies on a regularly updated search index, which also helps explain why search-related activity can matter when checking performance after software changes.

Move to Targeted Troubleshooting

If storage, CPU use, memory pressure, background activity, power mode, and software updates do not explain the problem, move on to targeted troubleshooting such as Safe Mode.

That order keeps the process focused. Start by identifying what is under strain, change the setting or app linked to the slowdown, and only then consider a more invasive fix. A slow MacBook may need attention, but the first answer is often already inside macOS.
