Microsoft’s AI-Focused Windows Event Puts Surface Laptop Ultra Center Stage

Microsoft held its Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7, 2026, with the Surface Laptop Ultra and new AI hardware at the center of the presentation. The event was scheduled to begin at 10AM PT, or 1PM ET, and run for about an hour.
The company said the presentation would include CEO Satya Nadella, Windows and Devices chief Pavan Davuluri, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. Microsoft also teased “latest innovations across Windows, NVIDIA RTX Spark, Surface and the broader PC ecosystem,” pointing to a show that reaches beyond a single laptop announcement.
Surface Laptop Ultra leads the Windows hardware push
Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra in June, but the Windows and Surface event was expected to provide more details about the machine. Its standout feature is a 15-inch mini LED display that reaches up to 2,000 nits of brightness, giving the laptop one of the strongest display specifications in Microsoft’s Surface lineup.
The laptop also includes the largest trackpad Microsoft has ever made. That detail matters because the trackpad is one of the main ways people control a laptop, and a larger surface gives users more room for gestures and movement without adding another accessory.
Microsoft is also giving the Surface Laptop Ultra a wide selection of ports. The machine includes USB C, USB A, and a full-sized SD card reader, covering newer connections alongside ports that many users still rely on for storage and accessories.
The company’s messaging places the Surface Laptop Ultra within a bigger shift toward computers designed around AI. The event will focus heavily on local AI and agentic AI, rather than treating AI as a feature that only works through a remote service.
NVIDIA RTX Spark brings serious AI hardware to the discussion
Jensen Huang’s appearance puts NVIDIA’s RTX Spark alongside Microsoft’s new Surface hardware. NVIDIA claims that the RTX Spark can deliver 1 petaflop of AI computing power, a figure aimed at workloads that require large amounts of processing capacity.
The system features 6,144 Blackwell GPU cores, 20 Arm CPU cores, and up to 128GB of unified memory. It will draw up to 80 watts of power, which gives the hardware a defined power ceiling while it handles local AI workloads.
That memory capacity is important because large AI models demand gobs of RAM when they run locally. The need for that memory is a major reason AI-focused systems cost so much, especially when they combine powerful processors with the components needed to keep models available on the device.
NVIDIA’s existing Linux-powered DGX Spark systems sell for $4,999. AMD recently launched its flagship AI desktop hardware, the Ryzen AI Halo, at $3,999. Those prices show where this class of local AI machine sits: well above an ordinary desktop, but built for demanding AI work.
Windows 11 remains the focus instead of Windows 12
Microsoft has already said that a new operating system, Windows 12, would not be released in 2026. That leaves Windows 11 as the company’s main software focus, with improvements and tweaks taking priority over a new major version.
That approach fits the event’s focus on updates across Windows, Surface, and the wider PC ecosystem. Rather than presenting a new Windows release, Microsoft can connect improvements to Windows 11 with hardware built for local AI and agentic AI.
Microsoft Corporate Vice President Brett Ostrum described the thinking behind that hardware in direct terms: “A machine like this should not sit still. It should be pushed. Taken to the edge. Used to make real what others call impossible. It belongs in the hands of world makers.”
Tom Warren also summed up the anticipation around the presentation with a short message: “Something new is coming from Windows.” The event’s details point to a combination of Surface hardware, Windows 11 changes, and AI systems that bring more computing work onto the device.
For Microsoft, the Surface Laptop Ultra provides the consumer-facing centerpiece, with its 15-inch mini LED screen, large trackpad, and broad port selection. The RTX Spark adds a more demanding AI angle, while the presence of Nadella, Davuluri, and Huang underscores the connection between Microsoft’s Windows plans and NVIDIA’s computing hardware.
